  2. September Meeting

August 24, 2009 by John Clayton

INETA Speaker Tim Huckaby will be presenting.

    Meeting Location Change!!

Location: 2804 3rd Ave. (Corner of Broadway and 3rd)

    Date: Tuesday September 8

    Time: 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Topic: Declarative based UI programming: WPF, Silverlight & Surface

XAML has become the de facto declarative language for UI development on the Microsoft platform spanning Windows, Web and the Microsoft Surface. This transformation to a single declarative language for all platforms has enabled Microsoft to deliver on the bold promise of a cross platform user experience programming model for the future. In this unique session we take a look at how knowledge of XAML and .NET languages like C# and VB.NET allow you to develop applications for Windows (WPF), the Web (Silverlight) and the Microsoft Surface using the same coding constructs and idioms. In this demo packed session we will take a look at how graphics, animations, data binding, styles and templates are commonly implemented on these platforms and how XAML makes all of this possible.

About Tim: Tim Huckaby is currently focused on RIA & Smart Client Technologies like WPF, VSTO, Surface, and Silverlight. He has been called a “Pioneer of the Smart Client Revolution” by the press. Tim has been awarded multiple times for the highest rated Keynote and technical presentations for Microsoft and numerous other technology conferences around the world by Microsoft Corporation. Tim has done presentations on Microsoft Technologies at technology events like Microsoft Tech Ed, Product Launch events, Dev Days, MEC, World Wide Partner Conference, MGB, MGX, and the PDC, along with 3rd party technology conferences all over the world is consistently rated in the top 10% of all speakers at these events. Tim was selected by Microsoft as a “Rock-Star” speaker for the International .NET Association and speaks world-wide on their behalf. Topic: Windows Presentation Foundation for Coders

Let’s face it, you’re not an artist. And besides, your users seem happy enough with their current user interface, so why bother with WPF? You want to learn more about WPF because it offers the best user interface programming platform for client apps. There’s a built in command model, data binding is extremely flexible and asynchronous loading is a single line. This talk explores the meaning behind XAML so you understand what’s actually happening behind your code. You also learn how to cleanly separate layout behavior and appearance. It also empowers beautiful effective next generation applications. You’ll leave this talk with understanding how WPF can benefit you and your business applications, whether or not you have an artist on your team.

    About Kathleen:
Kathleen is the Chief Technologist for AppVenture (www.appventure.com) where she leads the application generation efforts. She has been a Microsoft MVP for 11 years and is a member of the INETA Speaker’s Bureau. Kathleen has worked extensively with application code generation and is the author of Code Generation in Microsoft .NET (from Apress). She has published numerous articles on a range of .NET technologies and writes the monthly column “Ask Kathleen” in Visual Studio Magazine (www.visualstudiomagazine.com). Kathleen is also active in the Northern Colorado .NET SIG, Denver Visual Studio User Group, Northern Colorado Architect’s Group, and IASA Denver.

  10. Last nights meeting notes and future meeting suggestions.

February 13, 2009 by John Clayton

The meeting last night was very good.  John Clayton educated us on AZURE, Microsoft’s hosted internet-scale cloud services platform.  If you would like to try it yourself you can register at http://www.microsoft.com/azure/register.mspx.    John will also be putting up more information on his site www.codemonkeylabs.com.

I did find on the site they are going to eventually price it on a consumption based module.  http://www.microsoft.com/azure/pricing.mspx  It will be interesting to see the fee associated with the consumption, maybe a poor girl like me can afford it, we will see.

Next month we need suggestions for a topic and a presenter to present it.  I thought we had an INETA speaker for next month but they had to postpone.  So, Kathleen Dollard will be presenting for us in May.  She is a consultant, author, trainer, and speaker. She’s been a Microsoft MVP for over ten years and has spoken about .NET in 28 states and 5 countries. She’s written dozens of articles including the “Ask Kathleen” column in Visual Studio Magazine. She also wrote “Code Generation in Microsoft .NET” (Apress). Her passion is helping programmers be smarter in how they develop by learning to better use .NET languages, libraries and platforms. She works with WPF, WF, as well as core technologies including System.AddIn. She’s currently creating template infrastructure for code generation using VB XML literals. After working on the problem of capturing business intent in metadata and test definitions for years, she’s working with industry improvements in these areas. She’s also working on full life cycle improvements, such as unit testing, better debugging and static analysis (FxCop). When not working, she enjoys woodworking, snowshoeing, and kayaking depending on the outdoor temperature.

We are also confirming the date for September’s meeting with Tim Huckaby as the speaker. Tim Huckaby is CEO of InterKnowlogy – a software, infrastructure and network engineering firm dedicated to system and application architecture, software design, development, deployment and network engineering. As Lead Technical Architect, Software Development Lead, Microsoft Regional Director, writer, speaker, Microsoft .NET Partner Advisory Council member, and International .NET Association speaker, Tim has over 20 years of industry experience. Tim is one of the rare technologists whose expertise spans developer, system, network and infrastructure areas.

More info to come on both of those speakers.  But in the mean time if you have ideas for March and April please let Adrien know.

    Thanks,
    Regina
